SEO Tips: Google+

Posted on Sep 18, 2012 in Small Business, Social Network

Many times your website is the first introduction to your company that a potential client has, but to make that introduction you have to be found.  To be found you need to make Google happy somehow, from the myriad of other sites for businesses just like yours, you need to stand out.  I’m publishing a series of tips that will help to get your site moved farther up the list on all search engines, but specifically Google.

Today’s Tip: Google+
One year ago this thursday, Google+ was opened to the public.  After months of the masses clamoring to be among the nearly 25 Million users that G+ had already gathered through their Invitation Only program, the day came that anyone and everyone could join the new Social Networking Beast.  Join they did, by the end of last year Google+ had over 90 million members world wide, in June this year they claimed 250 million, but that still pales in comparison to the 900 million users that Facebook claims.  For that reason Google+ can be easy to overlook when it comes to SEO.  To say the least, you overlook Google+ at your peril.

Yes, peril.  The largest search engine in the world is Google.  Google has become a verb in multiple languages and it always means to find something on the internet.  They come out with a Social Site and you’re gonna ignore it?  Why not write a nicely worded letter to Larry Page and ask him to please drop your ranking by 30 places?  Google is constantly finding ways to further integrate Google+ into their already insane ranking algorithm.  If you do a search on Google (where else?) for “Google+ Effect on SEO” you will see that most experts agree that not using Google+ can cost you up to 10 points.  That means you will never see the front page of a Google Search unless none of your competitors are on Google+ either.

I’m Convinced, Now What?
There are actually two parts to Google+ and you need to make use of both of them.  First there is the Google+ Company Page, this is just like your Facebook Fan Page for your business, but it’s Google.  Recently Google replaced everyone’s Google Places page with a very basic Google+ Company Page, but you have to claim it, confirm you are who you say you are, and then keep it fairly updated for it to positively affect your SEO.  The second part of Google+ is actually more important.  The +1 Button (read Plus One) can be found on nearly every website on the internet at this point, usually right next to the Facebook Like Button.  You need people to +1 you, this works exactly like sharing something on Facebook.  It makes your post available to all of the friends (Circles) that the clicker is connected to on their Google+.  Since Google has access to their own Website Search Indices and the Google+ Data, they are comparing the two constantly.  The more you show up on Google+, the better off you’ll be.

I’m so convinced that Google+ is as important as I claim that I’m going to ask all of you to click the +1 Button at the bottom of this post just as an experiment, just to prove that it helps.  As a matter of fact, I wouldn’t mind at all if you read several posts and +1 them all.
