10/6/2011 – So I wrote this article back when Steve Jobs retired from Apple in August. I was astounded by the attention that a man’s retirement was getting. Yesterday Steve Jobs died and this article was read nearly 500 times, nothing I’ve written has ever been read 500 times in a single day. I’m not going to change the text of the article because my opinion of the retirement situation hasn’t changed, but I did want to add that Steve Jobs will be missed by the entire world, innovation like his doesn’t happen every day. The Technology World is a less interesting place today. Rest in peace, Steve.
Pssst…hey you. Did you hear about Steve Jobs? He retired from Apple, again. You hadn’t heard? Seriously? You should check out the story, here. And here. And here. Oooh, and here. And here. And here. And here. And here. And don’t forget here.
Oh, you had heard. Well did you see all the follow up stuff out there about Steve, his history in pics, videos, and even a comic book? And all the stuff about his replacement Tim Cook? You should check that out too, here. And here. And here. And here. And, oh yeah, here. And here. And here. And over here. And here.
Do we really need a thousand different articles all about the same thing in the first 12 hours after the announcement?
I don’t want anyone to get me wrong here, I applaud Steve Jobs for the work he’s done for Apple even while battling Pancreatic Cancer and beating it. I mean, if Dalton from Roadhouse can’t beat it, then that’s a seriously tough disease. I have all the respect in the world for the man. He’s a technology world hero, but he’s not the first person to ever resign as president of a large company. He isn’t the first person to go out on top, this happens all the time. So why all the fuss? My only hope is that this isn’t a ploy by Apple to get media attention.
Is this news really bigger than anything else going on in the world right now? I mean, I wish Steve Jobs the best, especially with his health, but it’s not like he’s out of work. He’s still working for Disney/Pixar.
I would love to hear what people think about this. Am I just being callous and overly sarcastic? What do you think about the media reaction to this story? Leave me a comment below.
