Computer Tricks From a 1 Year Old: The Button Mash

Posted on Aug 22, 2011 in Troubleshooting

Emma says, “If you hit enough buttons at the same time, weird things will happen.”

Emma found out that if you press Ctrl + Alt + Down Arrow you can flip your display 180 degrees.  She also realized very quickly that this only works with most ATI, NVIDIA, and Intel Graphics Cards, not all of them.  The last thing she realized is that this can really drive her Grandparents crazy.

Now you might be saying that she got lucky, that she only happened to find the right key combination by accident, she was just mashing random keys, and I will admit that you could be right.  However, I choose to believe that my child is just that smart and just that devious.

By the way, for those of you that tried the above key combination and are now reading this article upside down, you can hit Ctrl + Alt + Up Arrow to put things back to normal.

That sound you hear is Emma laughing with you, not at you.

Here are a few other key strokes that Emma’s “random mashing” could have turned up, oh ye of little faith.

Windows Key + D Minimizes and Maximizes all Windows
Windows Key + E Opens Windows Explorer
Ctrl + Esc Opens the Start Menu
Shift + Delete Permanently Deletes an Object From Your Computer
Alt + Enter Opens the Properties for a Selected Item
Shift + F10 Drops Down the Right-Click Menu of the Selected Item

What did I leave out?  There are hundreds of Key Stroke Shortcuts out there, what are the ones you use the most?  Leave me…I mean Emma, a comment below.
